(((Tuned)))
With the turn of a tuning peg, I was on my way to tuning my guitar. For anyone that plays, they understand that this process is tedious and relies on every string to be tuned together in all the same key. Normally, I use an electronic tuner, but due to dead batteries; I had to rely on my ear. My guitar has not been played in some time and it was extremely out of tune, so I expected a challenge. After twenty long minutes I finally brought the strings into tune.
So I was thinking, can we parallel tuning an instrument, to tuning our relationship with God? When tuning my guitar, I listened to certain specific notes on each string until they matched the correct standard pitch. After I finished, I started to think of us as Christians and the idea that we are God’s instruments. When even one string is not in consonance with the next, it will be out of harmony and sound dissonant. This made me think as to what we should be listening for when working on ourselves.
If we are God’s instruments how can we get and stay in tune? Hopefully our sound is harmonious to God. My thoughts would be; as we become more holy and Christ-like, we are most effective in furthering His kingdom. And relationally, the closer our relationship with Christ, the more tuned in we are to God, and the purpose He sets before us.
Even though I am metaphorically comparing us to musical instruments I see parallels as to how methodical we must be to ensure our character and way of living. I know personally I fall very short, but I do realize as with a guitar; the slightest turn of a peg and the whole instrument will sound off. I do not know if it takes more quiet times, memorizing scripture, fellowshipping frequently, or maybe serving others to help us in our quest to be God pleasing instruments. I do think it is an interesting thought, and know that individually it is something I want to strive for. I might not know exactly what that may look like, but as in the old cliché ‘there’s always room for improvement’. Especially when it is for God.
So keep an ear open and listen, stay tuned for God!
